Having now read a big book on Psychology - so what if it was a text book or if it had pictures in it? ... I can now use my expertise to diagnose myself as an incurable Psychopath. Thank you! It's a huge honor. Having now read a big book on Psychology - so what if it was a text book or if it had pictures in it? ... I can now use my expertise to diagnose myself as an incurable Psychopath. This is the simplest science book that I've ever read. It is written in an extremely lucid way and makes you understand the subject better. It doesn't feel like you are reading a discipline but stories about humans, about brains, about personality and disorders.

This is the simplest science book that I've ever read. It is written in an extremely lucid way and makes you understand the subject better. It doesn't feel like you are reading a discipline but stories about humans, about brains, about personality and disorders.

Dr Baron has done a splendid job. He has written a classic book on psychology and has taken care in explaining the concepts and ideas and theories. The book is filled with personal anecdotes by Dr Baron, numerous interesting examples, gripping studies of psychological cases and news paper reports and so on.

The book starts with a basic introduction on psychology and then moves on to explain the biological basis of behavior. This part involves a little biology as it tells you about brain, neurons, their electrical activity and neurotransmitters. Next that comes tells you about sensation and perception, consciousness, sleep cycles and hypnosis. It tells you then about the basic ways in which a human learns and gets conditioned. Many interesting experiments carried out by Pavlov, Freud are discussed here. Memory takes the next seat and it provides you an insight about how tremendously complex it is. Memory again induces some biology as Dr Baron discusses about brain and its different parts and their role in different kinds of memories.

Cognition is taken up this time and we learn about how humans think, decide and communicate. This also explains the biases that humans fall for. The book then takes you toward human development. It discusses everything about childhood, adolescence, adult life and aged life and what all differences humans face when passing through each phase. It answers questions about peer pressure, friendships, sexual relationships, bereavement, physical changes, cognitive changes and so on.

The later chapters are more interesting as they explain the complex topics like motivation, emotions, intelligence, personality, stress, mental disorders, therapy and social behavior. This part makes you understand the underlying complexities that shape humans. What motivates humans? Why are humans emotional? Why are some humans excessively gifted while others are deprived of even basic functioning of their brains? What defines personality? How does mental disorder originate? What lies behind the way we behave socially? This part of the book tends to answer all these questions and much more. Just dive in it and explore!

The book has helped me understand myself better. It was kind of an introspection and the book was my teacher. The book also helps understand humans better. Humans who are all same but yet are so different. It's a feel good book and you will enjoy reading it like any other fiction book. That's what is best about the book. It is like reading stories with somebody by your side to explain those stories.

But when I was reading the book, a question repeatedly caught my attention. Are psychologists perfect human beings? They ought to be! They know humans so well. They study them. They know all the variables, scales, dimensions on which the humans can differ.

I would suggest that if you ever feel like studying humans or psychology or anything related to humans, pick this book up. Read it and, trust me, you will get your questions answered.

This is a lucidly written book for beginners in psychology. I read it for UPSC Civil Services but I think if one is interested in general in psychology for any reason, this could be a good and easy read for them as well. However, I was disappointed with misprints and errors at multiple places but overall this book is good.

Vast variety of topics, starting from base building to the application of concepts. It covers almost everything. Concepts are very well explained in easy language. Some spelling mistakes can be ignored. Book should be read in a planned and well spaced manner to absorb the concepts fully.

I have spent almost one year with this book. I find it as the best introduction to psychology. Language is easy, and topics are discussed in a detail. One of the interesting aspect of this book is that writer adresses some unproven approaches like aroma therapy and hypnosis etc. which are usually ignored in some books of psychology. And lastly, it's going to stay as a reference book in my rack for long time. I have spent almost one year with this book. I find it as the best introduction to psychology.
